Wrestling History
In 1969, a wrestling team was formed and competed as a JV team in their first year. The 1970 season featured the first Varsity Team under coaches Charles Davison and Richard McAdam. Coach Charles Davison led the team to three straight League and State Team Titles during 1976, 1977 and 1978. Under his leadership, there were as many as 24 Individual State Champions and 7 State Team Championships. St. John's Wrestling has had a long tradition of State and League Champions over its 38 years of rigorous competition. Over the years, there have been many individuals who have contributed to the success of the St. John's Wrestling team. We hope that with the growth and success of the new and upcoming teams, we can deliver many more champions and titles.

Prior to 1976 the NYSP & PSWT was an invitational tournament. Starting in
1976 the top wrestlers from each weigh class of the Private Schools and the Parochial
School qualified to compete in this Tournament.
Beginning in the 1979 - 1980 season the Private Schools and Parochial School
NO longer competed in a season ending tournament. Thus, 1980 began the first year
that the Private Schools began competing in what is now known as the New York State Private Schools Championships.
The Catholic Schools formed the CHSAA State Wrestling Championships
(CHSAA) in 1980. The Catholic School Champion (CHSAA) winner could now
advance to the New York State Public School Championship starting in 1981 (NYSPHSAA Federation Championship).
